Route Highlights: Crossing a Continent:

Cairo to Suez Canal Tunnel (120 km)

  • Terrain: High-speed desert highway cutting east from Cairo’s sprawl into raw, rocky desert.

  • Landmark: Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel – you literally ride under the Suez Canal, shifting from Africa to Asia. It is the first and most thorough military checkpoint, so have your passport ready.

Tunnel to Ras Sedr (100 km)

  • Thrill: Long, hypnotic straight lines of black tarmac against golden sand. Watch for sudden crosswinds sweeping off the Gulf of Suez.

  • Must-Stop: Ras Sedr Rest Area – last solid fuel stop and coffee before the big southern leg.

Ras Sedr to Sharm El Sheikh Coastal Stretch (240 km)

  • Reward: The road hugs the Gulf of Suez, then cuts inland through jagged Sinai mountains before dropping toward the Gulf of Aqaba. The landscape shifts from flat coastline to dramatic, moon-like valleys.

  • Pit Stop: El Tor – small Bedouin market town, perfect for a quick shisha and mint tea break.

Sharm to Dahab Grand Finale (95 km)

  • Thrill: The classic coastal run – turquoise Gulf of Aqaba on your left, towering granite peaks on your right. Wide, smooth curves begging for lean angles.

  • Grand Reveal: Dahab’s palm-fringed lagoon appears like a golden mirage after hours of desert heat.

Top Things to Do:

  • Blue Hole – world-famous snorkeling and freediving site; a surreal sinkhole plunging over 100 meters. Even non-swimmers can snorkel the calm shallows.

  • Dahab Lagoon – kitesurfing paradise; shallow, flat water perfect for beginners and pros. Rent gear or just watch the colorful sails dance against the mountains.

  • St. Catherine’s Monastery & Mount Sinai – a 2-hour drive inland for a pre-dawn hike to the mountain of Moses. Sunrise from 2,285 meters is a spiritual punch.

  • Bedouin Desert Safari – jeep or camel into Wadi Ghazala for Bedouin tea and starry silence.

Dahab means “gold” in Arabic, named for the golden glow of its mountains at sunset. For centuries, it was a quiet Bedouin fishing village, a temporary camp for nomadic tribes trading around the Gulf of Aqaba. After the 1967 Six-Day War, Sinai was occupied by Israel, and Dahab was renamed Di-Zahav, a site mentioned in the Bible during the Exodus. The modern coastal highway was paved in the 1990s, but the road follows ancient caravan paths that once carried frankincense and spices from Arabia to the Mediterranean. Today, Dahab remains proudly off-beat, a low-rise, slow-moving counterpoint to the polished resorts of Sharm el‑Sheikh.
